Ange Postecoglou’s impact at Tottenham Hotspur is best summarized by a tweet from British broadcaster and ardent Arsenal fan Piers Morgan. Having watched a post-match interview of Postecoglou discussing his side’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday, Morgan wrote:
“I hate this guy… he sounds like a winner.”
Although a mere joke, Morgan’s reaction rings true for many of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals, who keep waiting for Spurs to slip up only for them to continue getting results.
For a side that finished eighth last season and lost its captain and top-scorer, Harry Kane, Tottenahm's start to the 2023/24 season belies belief.
The north London outfit look completely transformed under Postecoglou and are winning games while playing entertaining football, neither of which they managed last season.
Tottenham Hotspur unbeaten in Premier League
Tottenham have now played nine matches in the Premier League and they’re one of two teams in the league, alongside Arsenal, who are yet to lose a game this season. They have won seven games and drawn two while scoring 20 goals and conceding just eight in the league.
Unbeaten runs can be fluky sometimes, but there’s something about this Spurs team that suggests they might just keep going.
While winning the title might be a bridge too far this season, Postecoglou has guided Spurs to the top of the table and they are currently two points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal.
The Australian manager has also brought the feel-good factor back to the club and, for the first time in a while, management, players, and fans seem to be moving in the same direction.
Ange Postecoglou ticking all the right boxes
A manager’s core duty is to win games, and Postecoglou has performed admirably in that regard since joining Tottenham. More than just that, though, he’s ticking every other box.
The former Celtic boss has made history as the first manager to win the Premier League manager of the month award two times in his first two months in the job.
Postecoglou has also achieved the most points of any Premier League manager in his first nine games in charge after guiding Tottenham to an impressive 23 points. Then there’s the unity and glaring improvement in players on the pitch.
"People look at us at the moment with curiosity more than anything else," Postecoglou told Sky Sports about his side’s impressive start to the season.
"We have been really consistent both home and away against difficult opponents, we have had different sorts of challenges in every game."
"But we've maintained a really consistent level, there have not been many parts of a game where I thought our levels have dropped. And that is what is encouraging for us in terms of what we are trying to build."
Tottenham look primed to challenge for a top-four place this season and their current form suggests it is firmly within their reach. They may not be among the favorites to win the league, but Postecoglou has instituted a winning mentality and Piers Morgan might not be the only one surprised by them come the end of the season.
