Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke in 2023 about the reason why he has never been sacked in his career as a manager. The Spanish manager faced the toughest period of his career this season and appears to have escaped without facing the sack.
Guardiola is regarded by many as the greatest manager to have taken charge of a football team since the start of the 21st century. He has won titles in Spain with Barcelona, Germany with Bayern Munich, and England with Manchester City, managing three of the biggest sides in European football.
Manchester City endured an uncharacteristic struggle this season, winning one game in 13 at some point, causing them to drop out of the Premier League's European places. Their poor run of form caused a 2023 press conference from Pep Guardiola to re-emerge, where he joked that his hair was not the reason why he was never sacked as a manager.
"I will tell you a secret, we win games. If we don't win games, I would be sacked. It's not because my hair is better than the other ones. I'm not sacked because we win a lot of games. In this country when I was younger it always had the tradition to keep the managers. What happens today with a lot of pressure for everyone, a lot of investment, in a way I understand there's a lot of pressure. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It is what it is, you have to adapt."
Manchester City have won the Premier League four times in succession and six times in eight years since Guardiola replaced Manuel Pellegrini as manager. The manager also led the side to win the treble in 2022 and is regarded as one of the best managers to step foot in England.
Pep Guardiola's side have struggled this season, but the manager, who signed a new contract this season, never faced the sack. The Cityzens appear to have turned the corner as they prepare for an action-packed second half of the season.
Pep Guardiola finds respite as Manchester City defeat West Ham
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has seen his side win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since defeating Wolves and Southampton in October. The Cityzens picked up all three points as they defeated West Ham 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Brazilian forward Savinho continued his fine run of form, forcing an own goal and recording an assist for the Cityzens in the win over the Hammers. Erling Haaland also got in on the act with a brace to score his third goal in two games for the side, and Phil Foden also scored.
Following a win over Leicester City on December 29th, Pep Guardiola's side have now won back-to-back games to reach sixth on the log. They are only two points from a top-four spot and 12 from leaders Liverpool, who have played a game less.
