Italian World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso under investigation for match-fixing

AS Bari v US Citta di Palermo - Serie B

Guilty Gattuso?

Reports coming from Italy suggest that Gennaro Gattuso – the former AC Milan, Rangers and Italy midfielder – is currently under investigation for match fixing. Four more people have also been arrested in an early morning sweep by the police in Italy.

Roberto Di Martino, a Cremano prosecutor said that at the end of 2010-11 season, former Lazio player Cristian Brocchi and Gattuso were allegedly part of a ring that fixed Serie A and other Italian matches.

Salvatore Spadaro, Francesco Bazzani, Cosimo Rinci and Fabio Quadri; are the four person arrested for allegedly helping connect match fixers to players. It is said that more than 50 people have been arrested in Italy for match-fixing since mid-2011, with matches under investigation by prosecutors in Cremona, Bari and Naples.

The former Milan player was sacked last September by Serie-B club Palermo, after an uninspiring tally of 2 wins and a draw under his belt in the first 6 games of the season. He later worked with Swiss club Sion until February, when again he was sacked.
