Spain Player Ratings vs. Italy

Spain were knocked out on penalties
Spain were knocked out on penalties

Unai Simon - 7/10

He tipped Emerson's effort over the bar but stood no chance with Chiesa's spectacular goal, though the Spaniard didn't even attempt to dive. The Athletic Bilbao custodian salvaged some grace by stopping an Italy penalty in the shootouts, but it wasn't enough for his side.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 6/10

The right-back was off the pace a couple of times with his Chelsea teammate Emerson causing real trouble down his flank early on. But whenever Azpilicueta got forward, he provided a good outlet and looked to stretch Italy's defense.

Eric Garcia - 6/10

While his passing was admirable, Garcia could've done better with Chiesa's goal. He came up short again when the Juventus man fired another shot which came off Simon's feet. His night ended prematurely as he went off injured.

Aymeric Laporte - 7/10

Laporte's sliding clearance to win the ball from Italy in the second half was a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, it resulted in him giving the ball away to Chiesa, who then drove forward and scored Italy's opener. Laporte managed to salvage some pride later on with a terrific throughball for Morata's equalizer. He ended the game with one tackle and completed 91.1% of his 146 passes.

Jordi Alba - 6/10

The marauding full-back was uncharacteristically poor against Italy. His crosses lacked venom and he was often bossed by di Lorenzo, though Alba was sound defensively.

Koke - 7/10

Koke supplied the Spanish midfield with some much-needed poise and panache. He was dominant on the ball early on, wiping the clock with his Italian counterparts, and laid some excellent passes throughout the game too. Koke completed the game with two key passes and a 94.2% pass accuracy.

Sergio Busquets - 7/10

Italy left too much space at the back early on which allowed Busquets to wreak havoc. He even came agonizingly close to scoring after his audacious long-range effort whizzed just over the bar. However, the Barcelona midfielder's influence waned as the match wore on. Busquets made four tackles and won a foul while completing 91.9% of his passes against Italy.

Pedri - 8/10

The Barcelona youngster continued to impress with another top-notch performance. He didn't misplace a single pass in the first-half and often carved out his side's best chances. A superstar in the making, Pedri ended the game with two key passes, two fouls won and a staggering 97% pass completion rate.

Mikel Oyarzabal - 4/10

The Real Sociedad talisman was shockingly poor against Italy. Oyarzabal squandered two good chances in the first-half. He failed to connect with a beautiful chip from Koke, and let another huge opportunity go begging. All of this ultimately cost Spain as Italy sent them home.

Dani Olmo - 7/10

Olmo's positioning gave Italy plenty to think about as he operated in his false nine role to near perfection. His link-up play was brilliant too. All that was lacking from his game was a cutting edge in the final third, whilst he also blasted his penalty into the stands in the shootout. Olmo had two shots on target, made two key passes and won five fouls against Italy.

Ferran Torres - 5/10

Just when it seemed like he was peaking in his Euro 2020 campaign, Torres dropped an absolute stinker against Italy. He struggled to get himself involved in the match and recorded no shots on target in his time on the pitch. Torres was hauled off at the hour mark with La Roja chasing the game.

Spain Substitutes

Alvaro Morata - 7/10

Morata was subbed on shortly after Spain fell behind, replacing Torres in the 62nd minute. In typical fashion, he missed a crucial chance, but then redeemed himself with the equalizing goal. His heroics were shortlived however as Morata missed the decisive penalty in the shootout which allowed Italy to seal the game.

Gerard Moreno - 7/10

Moreno too was guilty of wasting a good chance after replacing Oyarzabal in the 70th minute. However, he found the net with his penalty in the shootout.

Rodri - 6/10

Rodri came on for the final 20 minutes against Italy, replacing Koke. He worked nicely with Busquets in midfield to keep the ball moving.

Marcos Llorente - 7/10

Spain sought to up their attacking ante with his introduction, and Llorente was particularly impressive in extra-time. He showed plenty of intent and even saw a goalward attempt blocked by Bonucci.

Thiago Alcantara - 6/10

Thiago came on in the 105th minute for Busquets. He telegraphed one beautiful pass in the second period of extra-time but couldn't conjure anything from a long-range free-kick later. Thiago scored his spot-kick with a well-struck shot.

Pau Torres - 5/10

The Villarreal star replaced Garcia after 110 minutes and the match just seemed to bypass him entirely.
