After such a demoralising, disappointing season, plenty of Manchester United fans will have been pining to see their former heroes that were involved in the period of domination under Sir Alex Ferguson to return to the club.

Following the Scot’s retirement, United have experienced a turbulent time, with successor David Moyes failing to take the club forward which ultimately resulted in his sacking before the end of his debut season at the helm.

Dutchman Louis van Gaal has been named as the man to lead the Red Devils back to the pinnacle of world football and a flurry of personnel changes are expected this summer.

However, a trio of familiar faces were recently photographed the famous kit, which has led to cheeky calls from fans for the prestigious names to be given a route back to Old Trafford.

Defender Jaap Stam and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar were snapped wearing United’s current attire, alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, who opted for the famous Oranje of his home nation.

Given United’s current defensive plight there would be few former players capable of coaching the current contingent back into shape, but Staam is set to take up a role with Ajax, while Van Der Sar is yet to decide what his next step will be, as is Van Nistelrooy.

The three ex-United players are all compatriots of van Gaal and if he decides to hand any of the prestigious personalities an opportunity to become part of hos coaching staff or return to the club they would surely jump at the chance.

With Ryan Giggs confirmed as his assistant, former players could represent a strong theme at United as the club look to reinforce their stature as one of the world’s biggest clubs and challenge for silverware.
