Three years ago today marks the last time that Arsenal lined up in a major cup final. That game – the 2011 Carling Cup final – saw one of the biggest cup final shocks of recent years, with Birmingham City beating the Gunners 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal from Obafemi Martins.
To celebrate, one Birmingham fan tweeted Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere a picture of the England man and Gunners teammate Wojciech Szczesny shortly after the defeat, prompting a cutting reply from Wilshere.
The Birmingham fan accompanied the picture by asking Wilshere is he had recovered yet, leading Wilshere to simply reply “Yes Mate, just about. Have Birmingham?” Wilshere’s comment taunts the fact that the two sides have gone in very different directions since their 2011 clash. While Arsenal have recovered enough to be in with a shout of a first Premier League title in years, Lee Clark’s cash strapped Birmingham side have dropped down to the Championship since the day that their official site are referring to as “ObafemiDay.”
The midlands side currently sit 16th in the second tier just above the relegation places, making them an easy target for Wilshere’s comeback to the cup final taunts. What’s that saying about people in glass houses throwing stones again?
