Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes club manager Jurgen Klopp will overhaul his squad but will wait till summer, according to the Evening Standard. Carragher expects the German coach to be patient because of the lack of top-class players likely to be available in the winter transfer window.
The 48-year-old has enjoyed a solid if not spectacular start to life at Anfield, losing just one of seven games since being appointed as Brendan Rodger’s successor in October. The former Borussia Dortmund manager enjoyed an impressive 3-1 victory over champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and a 1-0 win against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.
The Reds sit 10th in the Premier League table, nine points off leaders Manchester City and seven points off fourth-placed arch rivals Manchester United.
The January transfer window is fast approaching and many fans would be naturally curious to know about Klopp's 'wishlist'. However, the German coach has refused to entertain talks of new signings in January, insisting he is happy with the current crop of players at his disposal.
When Klopp first arrived in England, many had suggested that he would be looking to recruit his former players, the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus at Anfield. But the Reds boss played down the rumours and made it clear he was not looking to reunite with the aforementioned players and has no intention of luring Dortmund’s key players to Merseyside.
Current Liverpool players not ‘good enough’: Carragher
Carragher, who’s now a pundit at Sky, believes the 48-year-old will consider overhauling his squad in the near future, insisting the current crop of players are ‘not quite good enough’ to match the club’s ambitions. However, he expects Klopp to remain patient until summer in order to acquire the services of top-class players.
“Eventually, he will make big changes but I think in January it’s always difficult to make those kinds of changes,” the Liverpool legend said.
“Now and again you see signings coming in January who make a big difference - Luis Suarez was huge for Liverpool.”
“Daniel Agger came in January too and he did really well, but it’s not normally a time when you get the best players on offer.”
“I imagine the changes Klopp will look to make and want to implement will come more in the summer.”
“At present the team and the squad isn’t quite good enough to be where everyone wants Liverpool to be and that’s the whole point why you bring a new manager in.”
