Jamie Carragher: Ryan Giggs should not be appointed as permanent manager of Manchester United

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Ryan Giggs should not take over on a permanent basis when the managerial position is filled at the end of the season at Manchester United.

David Moyes was sacked by the Red Devils on Tuesday morning and it was announced that Ryan Giggs, already on the coaching books with Moyes’ team, would take charge of the club’s final four Premier League matches this season.

Carragher believes Giggs is a good fit for the remainder of the season and the coaching at Manchester United for the foreseeable future, but does not believe the Welshman should be considered for the permanent managerial position at the end of the season.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “Ryan Giggs won’t have experienced this before but if anyone knows the Manchester United way, he’s probably the only player who was there at the very start with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He’s taken his coaching badges and obviously wants to be a manager. The days of somebody going from being a player into a big job like that has changed but Giggs, what a great player, knows the club inside out, and if there was any player you were going to look at to take over it would be Ryan Giggs.

“If he has a great end to the season, who knows? But I imagine they’d bring another manager in and try to keep Ryan Giggs as part of the coaching structure.”

Man Utd have scored fewer goals at home in the Premier League this season (22) than both West Ham & Stoke (both 23).
