This season has seen a record spend by clubs, with a reported £760 million spent by Premier League clubs since the start of the season. Whilst the January transfer window failed to match the 2011 record spend – and saw a low key finish – this winter saw a number of big money deals, with Chelsea and Manchester United providing the pick of them.
Here’s our account of the window in numbers:
£140 million: January’s total spend by Premier League sides. Up £10 million on last year’s total, but short of the record £225 million spent in January 2011.
29% - The amount of the Premier League’s total January spend that went on the deal to bring Juan Mata from Chelsea to Manchester United.
£6.5 million – The average amount spent per club this winter.
£ 2.7 million: Each club’s average January spend if Manchester United and Liverpool are taken out of the equation.
Four: The number of clubs to make no signings. Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Southampton.
34% - Chelsea’s share of the January transfer window spend – the highest of any club. Jose Mourinho spent £21m to bring Nemanja Matic from Benfica, £12 million to bring Kurt Zouma from St Etienne and £11 million to sign Mohamed Salah from Basel.
£65 million - The amount of money spent in January on players from foreign sides – 50% of the league’s total spend.
Six - The highest number of players signed by any one side in the winter window. Cardiff and Fulham both added six players to their squads.
£35 million - A total of £35 million was spent on deadline day – 27% of the window’s total spend.
Twelve - The highest number of outs at any one club. Manchester United boss David Moyes had a clear out of his squad by allowing 12 players to leave, eleven of which left Old Trafford on loan deals.
