A 21 year old hailing from one of the economically backward states of India, Mizoram, started on a positive note in international football in 2012 AFC challenge cup qualification against Chinese Taipei by scoring a goal. The tournament was a blessing for him as he was one of the top scorer of the tournament.
His selection was made due to India’s urgent need for a replacement of the old warrior Bhaichung Bhutia, who is an inspiration for many soccer stars in India. He was given a nod ahead of Sushil Singh, Joquim Abranches, and C.S Sabeeth. His impressive tenure as a member of India under-19 team in Asian Games guaranteed him a spot in the AFC Challenge qualification.
His biggest challenge came up in the match against UAE, where he scored a goal in the home leg. He was impressive throughout the match too. Then, he scored against the Malaysians. Both of the team have a tight defence and are ranked above than India.
Then came the 2011 SAFF cup. Though the tournament was an average one for the youngster, he scored a goal each in semis vs Sri Lanka and in Finals vs Afghanistan.
His dedication and talent finally got rewarded when he was called on trial for Rangers FC along with Sunil Chhetri by manager Ally McCoist.
“They showed some lovely touches and adapted to the different surroundings they experienced”, was McCoist’s reaction about the duo.
He is now been given the captaincy by the Under-22 coach Arthur Papas to take India into the AFC Asia Cup 2012. The first match was impressive as they ripped apart a well organised Lebenese team. They won 5-2 and Jeje came off the bench to score 2 goals.
Then in the next match against Iraq, India fought hard and lost 2-1. India did play well against a team which is ranked 74 in FIFA world rankings.
