Jimmy Greaves - The goal machine

Jimmy Greaves

From the moment he was signed as a youth player in 1956 it was clear that he was special; he scored 114 goals at youth level forcing his way into the first team at the age of seventeen.

On the 24th of August 1957 Greaves made his debut against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane scoring a second half equaliser. He then scored on his home debut as he announced his arrival with a bang.

Greaves quickly became the superstar of the Chelsea team scoring 22 league goals in his first season, 37 in his second, 30 in his third and 43 in his fourth and final season.

His goalscoring record had never been seen before at Stamford Bridge and is unlikely to again; Greaves scored thirteen hat-tricks and five in a game a ridiculous three times.

This contributed to him becoming the first player to score more than 40 league goals in a season in what turned out to be his final season.

Despite his goals, Chelsea did not win any silverware at Chelsea and he left having scored 132 goals in just 169 games making him one of the top ten highest Chelsea goal scorers of all time.

This also gave him a goals to games ratio of 0.78 goals per game which is the best for any striker at the club which is extremely unlikely to be beaten.

Reportedly against his wishes, Greaves was sold in 1961 and after a brief spell at Inter Milan but joined Tottenham after a few unhappy months. He returned to England and continued his amazing run of goals.

If he had stayed at Chelsea it is difficult to imagine how he would not have far exceeded the current goals record held by Frank Lampard.
