Barcelona and Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff has expressed his gratitude for the immense love and support he received from the Football world, after it was made public that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The Barcelona players wore orange t-shirts stating ‘Cheer up Johan’ before their match with Eibar on Sunday, to show their support towards their former player and manager. Fans in the Eredivisie applauded the Dutch legend for a minute, during all the matches on weekend. Cruyff was immensely happy with the support, and mentioned that he did not expect to receive such kind of warmth from the media.
He stated his views on De Telegraaf, "Often the media are an additional tax, but the last week that has been different. The way the variety of media responded on my situation, was emotional and heartwarming."
Though, the ex-Barcelona manager was irritated by the fact that the news was leaked very early. He said, “Meanwhile, we have to wait. It's really annoying that it has been leaked so quickly, because the only thing I know now is that I have lung cancer. No more. Because the investigation is ongoing."
He further talked about his situation, saying, "I am extremely proud of the appreciation and response shown by all. That does not mean I'm happy with what happened to me. But if you think about my current situation, then it's all very special what happens. As the action of the club is not only to me but to applaud all cancer patients. Very strong. So let's football and the supporters showed off a very good side."
Lots of ex-players have come out in support of the former Ajax manager, and have tweeted their wishes to one of the greats of the game.
Barcelona’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu also tweeted his well-wishes for the Legend.
