Jose Mourinho said what Chelsea fans had been hoping- that no player is safe at Stamford Bridge regardless of their history, stature or alliances within the club.
Over the last few days he has mentioned that John Terry will have to compete for his place and show his worth for a new contract at the end of the season.
At some clubs, the incumbent club captain for nearly a decade would feel comfortable and “safe” but when you are at a club that wants to be challenging for the Premier League, there is no place for passengers regardless of their history.
After fifteen years at the club and nearly a decade as captain, this may seem harsh on a player that has personified the “Captain, Leader, Legend” moniker on the football pitch for Chelsea.
However, he will be 33 in December and has struggled for form and fitness as all those years of putting his body on the line start to catch up with him.
The key will be whether he can adapt his game to reflect his reduced capabilities and accept that the days where he plays 50-games-a-season may be behind him.
I believe Terry still has a huge role to play at Chelsea, he has experience that money cannot buy, a love for the club and the respect of the club’s supporters.
I am backing Terry to adapt and find a way to be a key part of the side without being an automatic starter and continue winning silverware at a club where he has been the most successful captain in the club’s history.
