It was a game between champions and former champions as Leicester City were first given a guard of honour by Chelsea before the game. Cesc Fabregas gave his side the lead in the second half after Matic was brought down in the box.
But Danny Drinkwater’s 30-yard strike helped the newly crowned champions earn a 1-1 draw on the last day of the season. The biggest talking point of the game was the future of John Terry.
After the end of the game today, Terry gave an emotional speech to the crowd and applauded the fans.
“The best moments of my life have been in this stadium. From myself and all the players I’d like to say a big thank you. Just before I sign off I’d like to say a huge thank you to Guus Hiddink.”
From the tone of his voice, it felt like he was giving a farewell speech but just as he was about to end it, the fans started chanting, “John Terry We want you to stay”. This triggered a response from the defender and he said, “I want to be here for the rest of my career. I want to stay.”
The crowd instantly cheered him on and even Roman Abramovich was all smiles clapping enthusiastically. Terry didn’t forget to thank Guus Hiddink for the wonderful job he had done during his second stint at the club.
He was then lifted into the air by his teammates. The signs are so far as confusing as they can be, but there are two things we know so far. Terry wants to stay and the contract he has been offered is not the ideal one he wants.
The Blues captain had been offered a one-year extension to his contract a few days back but he is still considering signing it as doesn’t seem to be a very straightforward situation. Today the Stamford Bridge faithful sang his name throughout and asked the veteran to stay.
Terry still feels he has football left in him but the new contract is not the role he was expecting which is reportedly the reason for the delay in his decision.
A few days ago Terry wrote a message on his Instagram account. “The contract extension the club has offered me is a different role and I hope everyone will understand I want to take the time to consider it carefully before making a decision.”
If the 35-year-old does decide to leave, there will definitely be several clubs who would want to sign him. According to reports, the Chinese Super League is one of the options for the defender.
Chelsea fans will have to hold their breath until their beloved Captain makes a decision.
