Jonny Evans a possibility for Premier League opener against Everton

Despite having an operation on an ankle injury sustained last season, Jonny Evans might be back in time for the opening game of our Premier League campaign against Everton.

A few weeks ago Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of his doubts about Evans being ready for the season opener but Mike Phelan says Evans is back in training and could be ready in time.

“Jonny Evans will hopefully be available when we get back [from the tour],” said Phelan. “He’s back doing light work on the training ground. We hope he’ll be available for the start of the season. He won’t have had the games under the belt but, if he’s fit and progressing well, we’ll push him forward.”

Phelan also confirmed that Chris Smalling is still a while away from even starting training.
