London, July 10 (IANS) Liverpool on Friday confirmed midfielder Jordan Henderson as the English Premier League (EPL) side's new captain, taking over from iconic Steven Gerrard, who left for LA Galaxy.

Englishman Henderson, who extended his contract in April, was Gerrard's deputy since 2014. The 25-year-old is a versatile midfielder and is playing for the leading football club since 2011 and has scored 20 goals in 186 appearances.

"I've always wanted to take more responsibility, especially at the stage of my career I'm at," Henderson was quoted as saying by goal.com.

"I feel I'm getting a bit older now, a bit more mature and of course I want to take more responsibility for the team. But at the same time, I think it's up to all of us as a team to take more responsibility on the pitch and make sure we put in good performances."

Henderson began his career at Sunderland in 2008, with a loan spell at Coventry City in 2009, before moving to Liverpool in 2011. In 2010, he won his first cap for England, having previously played for and captained the Under-21 team. He has represented England in 22 matches.
