Jordan Henderson has signed a new contract with Liverpool which will extend his time at Anfield by five year, and will see him earn £100,000 a week, the club confirmed. After a stretched out negotiation with club owners, Fenway Sports Group, Henderson’s contract will keep him at the club till 2020.
His new contract extension is predicted to spark a flurry of contract extensions at Liverpool. Martin Skrtel and Jordan Ibe are amongst several players expected to follow suit before the end of this season. Raheem Sterling though has asked the club to wait till the summer before they offer him a new deal.
The midfielder was bought by Liverpool for £20 million from Sunderland in 2011, and even though his start to his Liverpool career was shaky, he has proved himself to be a crucial part of the current Liverpool squad and is pegged to replace Steven Gerrard as the next captain of Liverpool.
The 24-year old was linked with several clubs in the Premier League after rejecting his previous offer worth £80,000 a week, but insists that he never thought of leaving Liverpool.
He had the following to say: “I never really thought it wouldn’t get done. For me it was just a case of leaving it to the club and my agent to sort it out. I always said that I wanted to stay at Liverpool and there was no other club that I would go to.”
“I wanted to commit my future and it was just a matter of time for my agent and the club to sort it out,” he added. “Thankfully today it’s done. I’m over the moon that it’s all done just so I can concentrate on the future and what needs to be done now.”
