Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho made it clear shortly after the end of last season that his priority for the 2015-16 season would be keeping the players that he wanted before diving into the transfer market and true to his word, the Blues have been relatively silent in this transfer window.
So when he was quizzed about his interest in Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, he gave a predictable answer but in true Mourinho fashion.
According to The Telegraph, he said: “Pogba is one of the top players in the world. Pogba goes to any team and improves that team automatically.
“I think everybody has an interest in Pogba. But there are things you can do and things you cannot do. I love the Eiffel Tower but I can’t have the Eiffel Tower in my garden. I can’t even have the Eiffel Tower of Las Vegas.”
Chelsea linked with other midfielders
Paul Pogba is not the only one the English champions have been linked with in the recent past. A number of other midfielders were touted to be headed towards Stamford Bridge as Jose is reportedly on the lookout for a midfielder to partner Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park.
The Belgian Axel Witsel and former Arsenal and Barcelona man Alex Song have both been linked to the role. While neither have been confirmed by the club, Witsel seems more likely to make the move at the moment.
Chelsea seem to be in the middle of negotiations regarding winger Mohammed Salah’s future as well. He returns to London on the back of a successful second half of last season in Italy with Fiorentina.
La Viola appeared keen on having him back but the Egyptian winger’s future is shrouded in mystery at the moment.
Continued interest in Everton’s John Stones
While Mourinho ruled out a move for Pogba, he reiterated his interest in Everton’s John Stones.
He said: “We have two who are more than 30 years old. We would like to have two less than 25 years old, which would give us the next 10 years. But as you can imagine it’s no something urgent, it is not something we are desperate for.”
Everton’s Roberto Martinez is unhappy about Chelsea’s interest in Stones being so public as he did not expect them to pursue the defender so openly. The Blues, however, will go on undeterred despite having their first bid rejected.
