Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that he may need to sign a new striker after watching his forwards struggle again in their Capital One Cup defeat to Sunderland last night.
The Blues lost 2-1 in extra time at the Stadium of Light having missed a host of opportunities to kill the game off when they were leading 1-0.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho seethed at his attackers who are struggling to finish games off.
“We have to score goals and kill off opponents – it’s not just about being dominant in every game,” he said.
“In this moment every game we don’t kill we are in trouble and sometimes we lose matches that we shouldn’t.
“It keeps repeating itself, against Stoke, Everton, Newcastle and now against Sunderland.
“We score in the first minute of the second half, and if we score another, with all our chances, then it is goodbye.
“But we don’t and our opponents keep breathing.
“Maybe the way to rectify this is to have a different approach [in attack].”
Mourinho’s brash comments come in a week when the Blues have been linked with several new strikers, with Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba all struggling.
Porto forward Jackson Martinez remains an option, while the club are also believed to hold an interest in Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, despite the Belgian’s current poor form.
