EPL 2016/17: Jose Mourinho laments Manchester United's lack of luck

Jose’s decision to bring on the Belgian proved costly

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho remains adamant about the club’s lack of luck as the Red Devils drew their third consecutive game in the Premier League on Sunday.

This isn't the first time this season Jose Mourinho’s team failed to accumulate all three points even after controlling the majority of the match. The game against Everton once again saw the Red Devils have the majority of possession and also a one-goal lead courtesy of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the club’s luck ran out just when they needed it the most as Everton equalised in the 89th minute of the game.

Mourinho’s late decision of bringing on Marouane Fellaini ended up being a disaster as the big Belgian midfielder gave away a penalty to Everton minutes before the referee could blow the final whistle. Leighton Baines converted the penalty as the game ended 1-1 on Sunday.

The 1-1 result left Manchester United still in 6th position in the Premier League table with just 21 points from 14 games. When asked about Fellaini’s foul inside the penalty box, "I didn't see it," said Mourinho. Mourinho snapped at a media man after being asked about his decision to bring on Marouane Fellaini at such a crucial point in the game.

"I thought you would know more about football than you do - because the answer is obvious,” he fired.

Mourinho stated that the Toffees are no longer a passing team and that they play direct football now, and that he only brought the Belgian on to aid the team defensively.

Everything is direct, says Mourinho

"Everton is not a passing team anymore like they were in the past. Everton is a team that plays direct: goalkeeper direct, Ashley Williams direct, Funes Mori direct. Everything direct.

"When a direct team is losing they intensify their direct football and when you have a two-metres (tall) player on the bench you play him in front of the defensive line to help the team win," the Portguese claimed.

Despite this being the 6th draw for United in their last eight Premier League games, Mourinho insists that his team put in a very good performance and deserved all three points from the game.

"It's another game with a very good performance. We are not getting the results we deserve. When you play well there's nothing more you can do. Oppositions are leaving the stadium super happy with points they don't deserve and we are leaving the stadium with a feeling we deserved more."

Mourinho has been criticised in the past for not playing attractive football and instead, parking the bus against strong teams to get a favourable result. Mourinho hit out at the media for slating his team despite playing attractive football like everyone wanted.

The misunderstood one

"You (reporters) have to make a decision," Mourinho said. "Because when my teams are playing pragmatic football and winning matches and titles, you say that is not right and nice.

"When my teams, like now, play very, very well, you say that what matters is to get results no matter what.

"At this moment in the Premier League, you have teams getting results that defend with 11 players and attack the space on the counter-attack (and you say) it's phenomenal, beautiful. So you have to make a decision," added Mourinho.

Manchester United are falling behind in the race for the Premier League title as they are currently 13 points behind table-toppers Chelsea FC. The Red Devils next face Zorya in their final Europa League Group stage match on the 8th of December.
