Jose Mourinho, speaking at his pre-match press conference, ahead of United’s trip to Everton has stated his team might be out of the title race following their dreadful start to the Premier League campaign. United currently sits in sixth place, 11 points off league leaders Chelsea and a massive 8 points off fourth after just 13 games into the season.
United were on the back on four consecutive home league draws, compiled to their worst ever start to a Premier League season under any manager. Mourinho in his press conference with reporters last evening stated,
"When I was speaking about destinations, I think the destination is for us is to be champions," he said. "Maybe not this year, maybe we cannot do it.
"I don't know. In football anything is possible, but maybe we don't do it.”"There's a gap between us and the top of the table, but the destination is for us to be the champion. I don't know when, maybe next year, maybe this year, perhaps in two years' time."
"Maybe when I'm not here, and somebody else comes, but if we follow this direction the destination is to be champions."
Hoping to turn the season around
Coming off as a rather negative message to the United hopeful, hoping and urging the team to turn their season around, Jose Mourinho’s approach to the media has gotten all the more complicated with his words surrounding United’s title charge. As the manager claimed in pre-season, his vision was to win it all with United he did heap praise on the team, hailing them as the most attacking side he’s ever worked with.
Mourinho received a suspension and fine for kicking the bottle in the league game against West Ham but was quick to grasp the situation and take blame for his actions, as he went on to state the rules should apply to anyone committing the offence.
"The only thing I would like would be the same rules for everyone," he said following the latest punishment.
"Let's go back to the last one. I kick a bottle of water; I cannot do it. If I do it, it's a sending off. After the sending off, there is a punishment.
"So I accept that is a sending off. In fact, if you see the images, when the referee comes, I go - not a word, not a complaint. I accept the suspension of one match, and it's as simple as that.
"But it has to be the same for every manager. It has to be the same."
United travel to Goodison Park looking to end their run of draws in the league, eager to pick up a win and keep the pace on the five clubs above them in the standings.
