What's the story?

According to various news outlets, Jose Mourinho was offered a swift return to management by his old club Benfica last week. But, the Special One has rejected their offer as he has no plans of returning to the Primeira Liga anytime soon.

Mourinho has stayed away from the media, ever since being shown the door by Manchester United last month. The offer received from Portuguese giants is said to be the first offer made by any club for the temperamental manager.

The report claims that even a short-term deal until the end of the season is off the tables as the acclaimed manager weighs in on his options for the time being.

In case you didn't know...

Jose Mourinho began his managerial career with the Eagles, who are one of the most successful clubs and can be considered too good for their league in Portugal, back in 2000.

The Primeira Liga giants parted ways with Rui Vitoria last Thursday, after a 2-0 defeat to Portimonense. It should be noted that the 48-year old had led the club to back-to-back league titles and took the club within touching distance of the title last season.

The heart of the matter...

Ever since Mourinho was sacked by the Red Devils, everyone's interest in knowing the two-time Champions League winner's next destination has been on the peak.

Benfica, who had recently sacked their manager, reportedly made an approach for Mourinho but were declined outright by the 55-year old, as he does want to a return to his roots just yet.

Record also noted that the primary reason for him not returning to his first club as a manager has nothing to do with contract issues but club's audacious approach failed due to the fact that this move just doesn't fit in with his plans for the foreseeable future.

Manchester United have hit a purple patch under his replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who was subsequently appointed as the caretaker manager at Old Trafford.

What's next?

Jose Mourinho has joined some elite managers like Zidane, Wenger, and Conte in the growing list of top coaches without a job at the moment.

While he has rejected an offer from one of his old clubs, it remains to be seen what he'll do if another one of his older clubs Real Madrid, in particular, come calling.
