Chelsea got their second victory in the UEFA Champions League group stages after defeating Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 on Wednesday night after a hard fought match at Stamford Bridge, breathing new life to their European campaign. Jose Mourinho was ecstatic after the game and thanked the fans, saying he would “give them anything”, according to Independent.
The Blues, who have suffered one of their worst starts to the Premier League in recent years, went ahead to take the lead in the first half courtesy of an own goal by Alexander Dragovic. The Austrian did, however, redeem himself, by equalising in the 78th minute.
Mourinho responded by bringing on Pedro and Eden Hazard, and Chelsea charged forward once again; with Willian finally converting from a free-kick in the 83rd minute to send The Blues ahead for the second and final time.
Mourinho moved by the Chelsea fans’ ovation
Mourinho was applauded during the match by the Chelsea fans who sang his name. And the Portuguese acknowledged their support by waving out to them.
The Chelsea boss, who has been privy to the knowledge of a possible exit from the club, has found a cornerstone in the Blues’ fans. Mourinho praised the fans for their support in the post-match interview. He said that the fans had not failed to recognise what he has done for the club and that he had brought good memories to them.
“This is my moment because it was amazing. The club has to be very proud of their fans,” said Mourinho.
The Portuguese manager added that the air of negativity surrounding Chelsea in the media had not affected the fans. He was understandably overwhelmed and was at a loss for words.
"It's not normal, such a support. Not just after a bad run but mentally. What people read, listen, see on TV. I don't know how to thank them,” Mourinho conveyed.
The Blues boss also praised Willian for his performance on the night. The Brazilian midfielder is currently the club’s top scorer this season.
“It’s difficult for me to forget some fantastic individual performances but I think it’s fair to look at Willian with different eyes because of his work rate, his quality on the ball, and obviously his participation with the first goal and a phenomenal second goal,” Mourinho said.
