Jose Mourinho, who is the current manager of Chelsea, has declared that Tottenham are one of the six teams who are contenders to win the coveted Premier League trophy. The ex-Real Madrid coach feels that the title race is more open this time around, unlike his first spell with the Blues.
“Tottenham are a big contender. They have bought players with quality,” he said ahead of Saturday’s trip to Spurs.
“Six teams are competing for the position. Any one of the six teams can be first, any one can be sixth.”
So far it’s been a good start for Spurs, Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, and Paulinho have looked very impressive new recruits as they have won 8 of their 9 games and conceded just 1 goal which was in the derby match against current Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Villas-Boas will also square up against many players he was in charge of at Chelsea, one of them being Juan Mata who has hardly featured in the Chelsea line-up this season.
During his first stint with Chelsea, Mourinho lasted 3 seasons, during which he won the Premier League title twice. Mourinho’s side is currently placed 4th in the table with 3 home wins, a draw against Manchester United and a 1-0 loss against Everton at Goodison Park.
“In my first time it was a clear race between Chelsea and Manchester United, two fantastic teams who were probably better than any team at this moment,” he said.
“Finally, Man City broke that period of blue and red dominance. At the moment the situation is different.”
“At this moment six teams are competing for the position, that is the beauty of the league. It is better like this.”
