Rio de Janeiro - Former Brazil international midfielder Juninho has revealed that he has spoken to Chelsea‘s Florent Malouda in a bid to bring the midfielder to Vasco da Gama.
Juninho, who captains the Rio de Janeiro club, says he and Malouda still have a close relationship following four years together at French top-flight club Lyon, reports Xinhua.
“I’ve had contact with him by phone,” Juninho told the French press.
“I told him I wanted to see him at Vasco. There was contact and the club was interested but unfortunately it was not possible due to financial reasons.”
Malouda has lost his place in Chelsea’s first team this season and in recent weeks he has been forced to train with the club’s reserves.
Reports have also linked him with Vasco’s Brazilian top-flight rivals Santos and a possible return to Lyon.
Juninho is adamant the 32-year-old would be successful in Brazil.
“It might be a little difficult at first to adapt but with all his qualities, I think he will bring a lot to Brazilian football. I hope he comes,” Juninho concluded.
