What’s the story?
Kalidou Koulibaly has opened up on a hilarious incident which involved Maurizio Sarri during their time together at Napoli. The defender said Sarri pleaded him to stay while his wife gave birth to his son.
In case you didn’t know…
Koulibaly grew up to be one of the best centre-backs under Sarri who managed the Naples-based club between 2015 and 2018 before leaving for Chelsea.
The heart of the matter
Koulibaly recalled the hilarious incident which took place when the Senegalese's wife gave birth to his first son, in his piece on The Players Tribune.
When his wife called Koulibaly to inform him about her going into labour Sarri insisted the defender must stay and not leave as he needed him for the game that night. Opening up on the whole story he said:
"No, no, no. I need you tonight, Kouli. I really need you. You can’t go.”
"I say, “This is the birth of my son, Mister. You can do whatever you want to me. Fine me, suspend me, I don’t care. I am going.”
"Sarri looks so stressed, and he is smoking his cigarette. Smoking, smoking, thinking … then finally he says, “O.K., O.K., you can go to the clinic. But you have to be back for the match tonight. I need you, Kouli!""
Koulibaly did return in time for the game thinking Sarri is desperate for his help and did not want to let his team down.
"I am getting ready to play, and Sarri comes into the dressing room and puts up the team sheet. And I am looking… looking… looking,” he said.
"My number is not there. I said, “Mister! Are you kidding me?”
"He said, “What? It is my choice.”
"I said, “Mister! My son! My wife! I left them! You said you needed me!”
"He said, “Yes, we need you on the bench.""
What's next?
The two might have had some good memories during their time together in Napoli but will tussle it out for Serie A title as the Italian has returned from the Premier League to take charge of Juventus.
