Kolkata-side Southern Samity are the new All-India Kalinga Cup football tournament champions after beating former I-League side Air India 4-2 on penalties after a goalless match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack in the state of Odisha.
Much was expected in the match-up of the two I-League Division 2 sides but it ended goalless between these two teams.
This years All-India Kalinga Cup football tournament was jointly hosted by the Department of Sports & Y.S. of Government of Odisha and the Football Association of Odisha.
In the first semifinal on Sunday, Air India from Mumbai had won 4-3 against Bhowanipore Club from Kolkata in an entertaining encounter; while on Monday in the second semifinal Southern Samity of Kolkata had beaten local Cuttack-side Rising Students Club 5-3 on penalties after the match had ended in a one-all draw in regulation time.
