Real Madrid and France striker, Karim Benzema was marred with controversy last season, thanks to the sex tape scandal of Mathieu Valbuena. However, after recent developments, it seems as though the Frenchman might just be innocent—and his lawyers are now asking for the case to be dismissed.
The French forward’s lawyers believe that the case should be adjourned because it is biased in its nature.
“We are contesting Karim Benzema’s indictment,” Karim Benzema’s lawyer, Sylvain Cromier, said to beIN Sports.
“We are contesting some elements in the investigation. We think that some processes were unfair and disloyal.
“We also think that there were some leads that distorted the investigation.
“There are a lot of mistakes, lots of falsifications. The events were misrepresented by investigators.”
Five people were indicted in the case and the Real Madrid number 9 was one of them. The 28-year-old found himself indicted with the accusation of blackmailing and taking part in a criminal conspiracy. Should the lawyers successfully convince the judge to dismiss the case, the former Lyon star will be exonerated.
“It is about the honour of Karim Benzema,” his lawyer continued.
“He is innocent, he has nothing to hide, he did nothing wrong—and we won’t give up until we prove his innocence.”
The case took another twist last Friday as a public prosecutor has asked for the indictment of former QPR forward, Djibril Cisse. The former France forward was arrested last year with the suspicion of foul play in the scandal.
However, he was later released due to the lack of evidence. Cisse claimed that he merely made Valbuena aware of the existence of the sex tape, and nothing more.
But recent developments show that the former Liverpool forward might have to answer to the case. The date set for the decision to be taken is on 16th December, three days before Benzema’s 29th birthday.
The news of this scandal rocked the country last year and it was the last thing they needed prior to the Euro 2016, which was hosted by France.
Karim Benzema was subsequently dropped from the squad for the Euro 2016, a decision that didn’t board well with the experienced forward. He claimed that it was his Algerian heritage that was the cause of the aforementioned decision.
Despite not having their world class forward, France managed to reach the final of the Euros but were defeated by a Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal side.
