Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman has said that he is thrilled to have made the switch from PSV Eindhoven to Italian club AS Roma after being chased by several other clubs.
The 23-year old footballer took the decision to sign a five-year contract and move to the Giallorossi after seeking advice from PSV teammate and former AC Milan midfielder, Mark van Bommell. The Serie A club reportedly bought the ‘Dutch Roy Keane’ for a fee of €16.5 million.
Speaking at his press conference on his decision to move to Italy, Strootman revealed excitedly:“It’s true I received other proposals, but I chose Roma because they are a great club on the world stage.”
“I spoke to coach Rudi Garcia and he is very important for me. I took everything into account and that made my choice easy.
“I can take on any midfield role, as I have both attacking and defensive characteristics. I like to help the team where I am needed most. I haven’t spoken to Daniele De Rossi yet, but it will be an honour for me to play alongside this great champion. I hope he will stay, as we can co-exist.
“Victory is the objective and this is an important challenge after two difficult years for Roma. I will give 100 per cent. I know Serie A is a difficult league, but the new coach is bringing in enthusiasm.”
The Dutch international went on to add that he spoke to his fellow Dutch teammate and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg in regards to his move to play at the Stadio Olimpico and his desire to give the Italian fans something to cheer for.
“The step up to Serie A from the Dutch league is very exciting. I spoke to Maarten over the phone and he told me Roma are a huge club with very passionate fans. There is a lot of pressure, but I think that helps players to do even better.”
