Federico Macheda’s United career has been on hold for a few years since ‘that’ goal he scored at the age of 17. Three years on from the dramatic winner against Aston Villa on his debut and Macheda’s progress is still buffering, with a lack of first-team opportunities and failed loan moves significantly damaging his development. Now, at the age of 20, and off the back of another failed loan move to Queens Park Rangers, Macheda realises the importance of the upcoming season for both his personal development and his Manchester United career. Regardless of how much he develops this year, you get the idea that Macheda will probably be short of proper United quality – but he seems determined to try and prove a point and make this season his best yet.“It’s great to be back at Manchester United,” the Italian told ManUtd.com. “I’m really happy to be back and I can’t wait for the start of the season.” He added “Last season was disappointing. In the first six months I didn’t get a lot of opportunities here so we decided it was best for me to go on loan. When I got to QPR things went a bit wrong, though, as I was feeling my ankle a lot. But now I feel a lot better and want to start the season well. It’s a big season for me.”
Macheda should leave with United on the pre-season tour next week and with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney on prolonged rest, it might be a chance for Macheda to show what he’s capable of – albeit in friendly matches.
