Sporting Gijon:
Diego Marino: 6/10
Marino could not do much about either the penalty or the header scored by Ronaldo, but he made important saves from Karim Benzema to redeem his rating for the day.
Douglas: 6/10
Douglas offered an outlet down Gijon’s right, providing very dangerous service into Real’s penalty box and influencing proceedings with his direct running.
Amorebieta: 5/10
Cristiano Ronaldo got the better of the Spaniard on one occasion, and Amorebieta never really recovered as Real had a number of opportunities to make it 3 goals or more after he took up deeper positions.
Jorge Mere: 7/10
Mere was the more proactive Gijon centreback, keeping tabs on Benzema and Ronaldo’s aerial presence and making timely headed clearances.
Lillo Castellano: 6/10
Castellano had his hands full with the marauding Danilo and Vazquez on his wing. He dealt well with their threats but was frequently stretched out of position.
Isma Lopez: 7/10
He picked out onrushing Carmona’s run perfectly for Gijon’s goal in the first half, and was very lively throughout the game.
R Ait-Atmane: 6/10
Ait-Amanne was not great at getting into shooting positions, but he made up for that with his consistent running.
Sergio Alvarez: 6/10
He turned in a decent performance on the night, considering the amount of possession Gijon commanded against a star-studded Real midfield. He kept the ball in circulation with great consistency.
Carlos Carmona: 6/10
Carmona’s finish with the outside of the foot was world-class, and he troubled Real on a number of occasions with his sharp runs into the area.
Duje Cop: 4/10
His anonymity would have yielded him a low score anyway, but Duje’s crucial penalty miss means that he gets a 4/10 rating.
