Gelson Martins feels betrayed by Diego Simeone; eyes Atletico exit
Gelson Martins's last year has been very dramatic. He was a part of the group of players who were attacked by a group of Sporting Lisbon fans at the club's training centre. Following the incident, he asked for his contract to be terminated and Atletico Madrid swooped in.
Despite signing on a free transfer initially, Atletico ended up paying €22.5 million as compensation after the Portuguese side threatened to take them to court. The winger was signed with a lot of promise, and his speed was vital as the Spanish side play counter-attacking football.
However, he did not suit Simeone's system and was benched more often than not. Martins then sought a loan move away in January and revived himself at AS Monaco. The winger is keen on returning to the Ligue 1 side on a permanent deal and is hoping that a deal is sorted quickly.
“I will have to wait and see if I return to Monaco. They want me to come back, and I do not want to return to Atletico Madrid. I am still the same player that I was last year, that has not changed. But my characteristics do not fit into Simeone's team, as they are very defensive.”
Talking about Simeone's betrayal, he said:
“When I signed, Simeone told me that I would play a lot as they look to play a counter-attack style, but I was mainly used as a substitute. I am a little disappointed in Simeone."
Reports suggest that AS Monaco are ready to snap him up, and are willing to pay €30 million for him. The winger was also linked with Liverpool while rumours of interest from Manchester United have also been going around.
'Hazard can make the difference', says former Real Madrid president
Former Real Madrid president, Ramon Calderon has praised the club for signing Eden Hazard. He claims that the Belgian can be the main man at Bernabeu and be the one to win games for Los Blancos from now on. He said:
“I think it is fantastic news for Real Madrid. The player is one of those that anyone would like to have on thier team - good dribbling, excellent passing and he can play both flanks because he uses the two feet.”
“He can play as a winger, attacking midfielder and also a false nine so it's perfect. I think it has been a good opportunity to take advantage of the decision of the player to leave Chelsea.”
“This is the real one, the other three [signings] I'm not quite sure but Eden Hazard is really that player that can make the difference in a team and I hope he would be able to play at the same level he has been in the Premier [League].”
Real Madrid eye Pogba-Bale swap deal
Real Madrid are looking to bolster their midfield this summer and are desperate to sign one of Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen. The Manchester United star is their main target now after they finally managed to seal the deal for Eden Hazard.
The Spanish giants are also looking to sell Gareth Bale this summer but are yet to receive an offer for him. Manchester United are reportedly the only club to have shown interest in him and Los Blancos are looking to strike a swap deal with them for Pogba.
Reports suggest Bale is adamant on staying while Manchester United are only looking to sign him on loan first. The swap deal is set to be a difficult one for Real Madrid to negotiate in this situation but they are ready to wait until the end of the summer transfer window to get it done.
