Football clubs all over the world consider the fans as their biggest strength. Clubs have tried various schemes to rope in new fans, but it would seem that the Madrid-based La Liga club Getafe has gone a step further. In a quest to increase their low stadium attendance, the club has come up with a unique solution. It has released a smartphone based dating application, Getafinder along the lines of the famous dating app ‘Tinder’.
The La Liga side has the second-lowest attendance in the league, with an average of only 7,753 fans flocking the stadium.
The app which is called ‘Getafinder’, was launched by the club through a video on it’s official facebook page. The programme is made exclusively for fans of the La Liga outfit and only works in the proximity of their stadium, the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, in the southern suburb of Madrid. Positioning software on the application makes it operative just near the stadium ‘so that it will only be used by supporters of the club.’
According to the club, the application’s sole purpose is to increase the amount of fans by reproduction! The application’s description reads, ‘Getafe is one of the teams with the lowest number of supporters in La Liga. What can we do about it? It’s very simple. Reproduce ourselves. With this application that only works inside the stadium Alfonso Pérez and nearby, you will find the Getafe fan you like, completely anonymous. If he likes you, match and procreate!’
Getafinder’s success can only be evaluated after a few years. If the average attendance for the club’s matches increases gradually, then one can definitely say that the application has been successful.
This is also not the first time that Getafe has tried an unorthodox method to increase the number of fans. Four years ago, they tried to encourage fans to donate sperm in a bid to create new fans!
Getafe sit 14th in the Spanish top division currently, in the shadow of their towering neighbours Atletico and Real Madrid
