Lahm wants to start the Euros with a 'bang'

Germany captain Philipp Lahm is eager to start the Euro 2012 campaign with a bang when they start their Euro campaign against Portugal on Saturday. Germany are grouped alongside Portugal, Denmark and World Cup finalist Netherlands in Group B. And the 28-year-old is trying to forget what has been a difficult season after finishing second in Bundesliga, and also losing the German Cup final to Borussia Dortmund. The Cup final defeat was followed by a penalty shoot-out defeat against Chelsea in the final of UEFA Champions League. However, following a 2-0 win over Israel in the final warm up match before the Euros, Lahm said:

We have sensational quality in our squad, we just have to show it now. That not everything worked perfectly is completely normal as we haven’t played together as a group for two weeks. It is important we hit the ground running in our first game.

The versatile full back can play on either wings and German coach Joachim Loew admits he is still uncertain where to play Lahm. Low had said in an earlier interview that a decision would be made later this week. However, Lahm reveals that he is comfortable playing on either side.

I am very relaxed about the whole thing, I believe it is a big advantage to be able to plan on both sides. I know I have played at the top level on either side of our defence.
