#2 Atletico Madrid's new-look team in action
Atletico has had to let go of their core players in every part of the pitch. Their mainstay in the defense Diego Godin, star-player Antoine Griezmann, go-to pivot Rodri, all left for greener pastures.
For all the firepower that Atleti lost, they managed to fire up their squad again with good signings. Mario Hermoso and Felipe were roped in from Espanyol and Porto respectively for a combined price of €45 million. To back up the left-back spot, Atleti signed 21-year-old Renan Lodi from Brasileiro. To fill the void left by Rodri, they bought Marcos Llorente from city-rivals Real Madrid for €30 million. And after all this, they only had to spend 15 million from their own pockets, rest 80 was the transfer fee for Lucas Hernandez.
To make up for Griezmann's loss they brought Joao Felix in and signed Kieran Trippier from Tottenham for the RB spot.
Atleti has rebuilt their squad from scratch which is highly appreciable but it cannot be said that every spot has got the best replacement. It remains a fact that it is more or less, a downgrade from Lucas Hernandez and Diego Godin in the defense. Same goes for the defensive midfield spot.
Atletico will face Getafe in their first fixture of LaLiga. Joao Felix has been in good touch in the pre-season games, so has Diego Costa. It'd be interesting to see if Joao Felix is pushed as a second-striker or a wider midfielder who cuts in. Another thing to watch out for is the solidity in defense. Atleti has had the best defensive record for 2 consecutive seasons now but the personnel is now different.
A lot of questions will be answered against Getafe.
