RUW Ciney beat Betekom 2-0 in the third round of the Belgian Cup at the Stade Joseph Lambert Stadium in Ciney. The third division club won the game quite easily courtesy goals from Aurélien Lambert and Coquelle, with the former’s opener taking all the plaudits at the end of the match.
In the first half, a world-class bicycle kick from Lambert opened the scoring for the home team against the provincial table side. The 27-year-old Belgian received a cross from the right and timed his movement to perfection in the opposition box, and completed the move by lashing the ball with aplomb into the top right corner of the net.
RUW Ciney are currently in fourth place in the Belgian third division and will now travel to the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges to take on second division side Cercle Brugge K.S.V. in the fourth round of the Belgian Cup.
The Belgian Cup was established in 1911 and is the main knockout football competition in Belgium, with over 234 teams competing in it. Last year’s winners were Club Brugge, who are also the most successful side in the history of the competition with 11 trophies.
