Frank Lampard, as we know, has scored 200 goals for Chelsea and is just two goals away from equalling Bobby Tambling’s record. The problem is, Lampard hasn’t featured much since scoring against West Ham playing in his favoured position back on 17th March.
Since then, he has been deployed by Rafa Benitez in a much deeper role and with a possible eight games remaining (including the Europa League final if we make it), we have to question whether or not he will get the chance to break that record.
Lampard himself has spoken this week and explained the same he said:
“I’m very proud to be on 200. The manager has changed the team around. I’ve only played a few games since West Ham [when he last scored] and the manager put me in a deeper role.
Goals never come easy. No one gives you goals. The most important thing is to be part of a team performance like the other night when we won. If a get the chance to play in a few games like that I think the goals will come.”
As dignified as ever from Frank but you just know that he is as frustrated as he has ever been at the club right now. After everything he has contributed to the team and the football club over the years, especially in the big games, to sit at Wembley watching, warming up and sitting back down again without being involved at all must have really hurt him!
(The cynical part of me when it comes to Benitez feels as though I wouldn’t put it past him to prevent Lampard from doing it because of his Liverpool connections!)
Frank Lampard will continue to work in training just as hard as everyone else, waiting for the opportunity to play first and foremost, to contribute like he says to the team and to then hopefully have the chance to be in the right position as he has been throughout his Chelsea career, to get the goals he needs!
We would all love him to do, we are willing him on to do it but there is only one thing stopping that, and that’s the manager. I would personally love Frank Lampard to start tomorrow and to get a hat-trick or two at least just to calm this all down.
That’s the problem though isn’t it. The longer this goes on and as each game passes by without being involved, the season’s end is getting closer and closer..
Do you think Frank Lampard will do it or could he miss out?
