Leverkusen edge past Monchengladbach

Berlin, Feb 8 (IANS) Heung Min Son’s second half strike helped Leverkusen snatch three points against Monchengladbach to open the 20th round of the Bundesliga.

Monchengladbach failed to bring their negative run to an end as Leverkusen inflicted the “Foals” their third straight loss Friday. Meanwhile, Leverkusen underlined their ambitious to top the league, reports Xinhua.

From kick-off, Monchengladbach were unable to threaten Leverkusen’s well-positioned defence. As the match progressed, Monchengladbach approached Leverkusen’s goal dangerously as Bernd Leno denied Patrick Herrmann’s volley.

However, the “Werkself” gained a foothold when Son and Simon Kiessling provided the first noteworthy chance for the visitors.

After the restart, Monchengladbach remained passive and Son had all time and space to curl the 1-0 winner from 18 metres into the far post to break the deadlock in the 62nd minute.

The deficit was a wakening call for the hosts but their efforts in the dying minutes remained fruitless as the visitors staged an insuperable defence.

Leverkusen recorded their 14th win of the season to remain 10-points adrift of Bayern whereas Monchengladbach suffered their seventh loss to sit in fifth place.
