Video: Lionel Messi's amazing dribbling against Athletic Bilbao

Lionel Messi failed to score in his first league game for Barcelona

Lionel Messi experienced a slow start to the new La Liga campaign as he failed to register his name on the scoresheet against Athletic Bilbao in Barcelona’s 1-0 win at the San Mames.

This was Barcelona’s third meeting with the Basque team in a span of two weeks with Luis Enrique’s men ending up on the losing side on previous two occasions in the Supercopa De Espana as Athletic prevailed 5-1 on aggregate over two legs.

And the Spanish champions avenged their Spanish Supercup defeat courtesy of Luis Suarez whose well-timed volley proved to be the difference between the two sides.

But Barca could have taken the lead in the first half itself when Suarez earned a penalty for his side. But Lionel Messi’s woeful form from the spot continued as the Argentine failed to convert the chance.

Although it was a rare silent night for the 28-year-old, Messi still managed to display his moments of magic on the pitch, most notably in the final minutes of the game where he picked up a pass from Rakitic from the halfway line and took on the defenders with one of his trademark solo runs.

Messi twisted and turned to go past the first man and then cut inside to beat another as he continued his run into the 18-yard-area before deciding to shoot for goal which went straight into the hands of Bilbao keeper Gorka Iraizoz.
