What's the story?

Barcelona ace Lionel Messi has overtaken an incredible milestone set by Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez to close in on yet another all-time La Liga record.

In case you didn't know...

Even at 31, Messi continues to create and break records in football, recently becoming La Liga's all-time top-scorer as a substitute and Barcelona's second-highest scorer in the Copa del Rey.

The Argentine ace added to his growing number of records this year when he netted a goal in Barcelona's 2-0 win over Girona.

The Liga table-toppers went into the game in need of a crucial three points after Atletico Madrid's win over Levante on Saturday closed in the gap at the top of the league.

Messi doubled Nelson Semedo's opener in the second half to secure his side's five-point lead at the top of the table.

The goal not only marked the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's 26th goal this season but also helped him surpass Real Madrid legend Raul's incredible victory milestone.

The heart of the matter

Despite finding the net, it was not the goal but the win that helped Messi overtake Raul's impressive milestone of 327 wins out of 550 games in La Liga.

The Barcelona captain now has 328 wins from 437 games in La Liga, which takes him up to third place in the list of all-time victories in the history of the Spanish top flight.

This means that Messi is only six league wins away from matching Iker Casillas’ record of 334 wins in the league and five away from equaling Andoni Zubizarreta’s record of 333 wins.

The 31-year-old forward has found the net 402 times in his 437 appearances in La Liga and the numbers are only set to go higher as he continues his exploits in Spain.

What's next?

Considering how things are going in La Liga, it is only a matter of time until we see Messi break Iker Casillas' record to become the player with the most wins in the history of the league.
