Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi has revealed why he took the drastic step of going blonde in the summer. When quizzed about his hairstyle, Messi affirmed that he wished to start completely fresh after his heartbreak with Argentina.

"One particularly tough day I dyed my hair, I had to start again from scratch. I said to myself, 'I have to make a clean break and start over" said Messi in an interview with famous comedian Mingo on Telefe's 'Polemica en el bar'.

In a fun show, Messi even donned the comedian’s iconic hat and scarf with Mingo even saving one of Messi’s penalties.

The Argentine maestro also admitted that his son Thiago might not be following in his footsteps as he has shown little interest in the beautiful game.

"I try not to give Thiago balls as presents, he doesn't like football much," he said.

"We'll see if he gets into it now as he's started playing in a club."

Messi – I did not deceive anybody about international retirement

Some sections of the media criticised Messi about his hasty decision to retire, however, the Barcelona superstar said he did not have any intention to deceive people.

"I am very grateful [to return to the national team]," Messi told TV Publica. "But I did not deceive anybody when I retired, I felt that. We were very disappointed with what had happened, but after that I thought better. I had a conversation with the Paton [Bauza] and the people as well accompanied me through it."

Messi was also touched by fans’ welcome when he played against Uruguay. Speaking to reporters, Messi said:

"I never imagined how the fans were going to respond when I said that [retirement]. Right from the beginning I received all kinds of messages of support and love. From the time we arrived in Mendoza, the fans have been incredible. Everything has been special from the time I touched down in Argentina.”

Asked about the problems within Argentina’s football association, Messi said the situation was no secret but is optimistic that the problems will be resolved soon. He continued, "Everyone knows what Argentina football is going through. Little by little it is going to get resolved. We must help any way we can."

Messi made a triumphant return to international football against Uruguay where he scored the game’s only goal. But, it came at a cost as he suffered a groin injury and is set to miss out on Argentina’s next World Cup qualifier match against Venezuela
