Middlesbrough’s English midfielder Adam Clayton believes even Lionel Messi wouldn’t be able to score for his club given the lack of chances created by the recently promoted team. Clayton also spoke about his teammate and former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo and his form in front of the goal.
“I’m not sure Messi would have got many goals playing up front for us. Alvaro’s not had many chances. Of course, we’ve felt for him. Hopefully, that can get him up and running and starting to score a few more,” Clayton explained.
The 31-year-old Spanish striker is currently on loan from Valencia and has been under a lot of pressure given his lack of goals for Middlesbrough. But Negredo responded in time to help them come away with a point from the King Power Stadium thanks to a 2-2 draw against Premier League champions, Leicester City.
Clayton also revealed the dressing room atmosphere with the presence of Negredo and spoke about the Spaniard’s personality. He also mentioned the 31-year-old’s determination and high spirits on the training pitch.
“He never stops working. He’s a big character in the dressing room and he’s good to have around. There’s been no sign of his head going down at any point. In training he does his shooting, he’s laughing and joking and keeping his spirits up.”
The Spanish striker showcased his class after netting two outstanding goals to stun the Premier League champions. Given the way things are going for Leicester City even Messi would find it difficult to score goals if he were playing for the Foxes.
English Premier League’s top goalscorer last season, Jamie Vardy once again failed to find the net as his goalless drought extended to 15 games. Vardy was replaced by Ranieri at the 65th minute for summer recruit Islam Slimani.
Negredo had scored the first goal of the game before Riyad Mahrez levelled things up for the Foxes with a penalty in the 34th minute of the game. Negredo gave Middlesbrough the lead again in the 72nd minute but were denied all three points after Islam Slimani netted a late penalty in added time.
Alto Karanka has been frustrated with the lack of goals from his side and will be hoping that Negredo’s brace against the Premier League champions will boost his side’s confidence. Middlesbrough will be taking on Hull City in the Premier League on the 6th of December.
