Yesterday, Liverpool defeated Everton in the most bizarre of circumstances. After an even game of a bunch of chances for either side, The Reds were handed out a massive slice of luck in the final seconds.
It was extremely harsh on Everton, who played tremendously and did enough to earn at least a point. However, these are the games that should be won if a team is to remain in the title race and stay close to the rampant Manchester City. Liverpool remains two points behind the ever so consistent Citizens.
The victory also gave The Reds bragging rights over their blue neighbours, in what was their first league derby win in one and a half years. Funnily, Liverpool has scored three late winners in their last six games against Everton, punctuating The Toffees’ hard luck in these big games.
It was an important result, considering The Reds’ European disappointment during the week. Now, the players have redeemed themselves and are back on track. With a heavy fixture list coming up, the squad needs to be in full force.
There were a few good performances, with most of the Liverpool side doing effectively well. The Reds pulled through in key moments, and avoided a number of scares from Everton attacks.
Among the better performers on the pitch, a couple of them stood out for various reasons. These two players had the ideal outcome from this game, and will hopefully carry on in a similar vein. Here are the two biggest winners from Liverpool's crazy derby victory over Everton.
#2 Fabinho
Fabinho signed for Liverpool in June, with high expectations of being the solid defensive midfielder Jurgen Klopp's side needed. He hardly featured in the opening weeks of the campaign, making his full debut in the League Cup defeat to Chelsea.
The Brazilian gradually got more and more game time as the season progressed, notching a couple of impressive outings under his belt. He still slightly struggled with the quick pace of the Premier League, and seemed to require a little more time to settle.
This aspect raised concerns in the Merseyside derby, as Fabinho started in place of the suspended Jordan Henderson. However, the midfielder was exactly what The Reds needed. He provided valuable cover to the defence, and was strong in scraps against the highly challenging Everton midfield.
It was a great game for him, his best one in a Liverpool shirt so far. This will only instill in him more confidence, as he will look to retain his starting berth at Anfield. Fabinho is really coming into his own, and is slowly becoming a key player for The Reds this season.
#1 Divock Origi
Without a shadow of doubt, the biggest winner on derby day was Divock Origi. Before the game, most fans would not have known that he was still a Liverpool player. After an uninspiring pre-season, Origi's Liverpool career seemed to be all over.
He has made a couple of substitute appearances this season, including yesterday. A miss from a yard out seemed to signify his recent career progression before the incredible happened.
After a massive stroke of luck, the ball bounced on the crossbar and fell to the head of the striker, who could not miss.
The forgotten man, Divock Origi, had just scored a 96th-minute winner in the Merseyside derby to everyone's shock and amazement. He was the unlikeliest of heroes, giving Liverpool 3 massive points.
But don't forget what this could do for the Belgian striker himself. After a barren couple of years, this goal could catalyse a new-found confidence in him, and help spark his Liverpool career back to life.
This is a massive moment in Origi's young career, a possible turning point. With the massive potential he has shown, Origi might now have more game time coming his way. He still has a part to play at Anfield this season, all thanks to this one goal.
