It was not an easy match for Liverpool or West Brom but the visitors looked like the favourites to win and seemed to have parked the bus after their second goal. Liverpool looked to be on their way to a second consecutive Premier League loss until Liverpool’s Divock Origi came on and scored a goal in the dying minutes of the match and helped Liverpool snatch a draw.
The result excited Jurgen Klopp and the Anfield crowd in such a way that the manager gave a highly passionate reaction, motivated the crowd for more and gathered his players after the result to salute the crowd for their support.
Jordan Henderson made his return as captain for Liverpool and scored the first goal of the match - credited to Coutinho and Lallana - but the Baggies equalised a few minutes later through Craig Dawson. West Brom took the lead through Jonas Olsson in the second half only for substitute Origi to level the scores through a deflected 96th-minute goal.
Here are the player ratings from the game:
Liverpool
Simon Mignolet – 4
Mignolet possibly had his worst performance under Jurgen Klopp. He was all over the place and the error responsible for West Brom’s first goal was unforgivable. It was poor keeping from him.
Nathaniel Clyne – 6
Clyne looked keen on getting forward. Looked solid in some parts although he was involved in the mix-up for West Brom’s first goal.
Martin Skrtel- 6
There was an improvement from last week but the team’s defence being a mess holds Skrtel accountable as he has trouble defending set-pieces and his passing at the back wasn’t good enough.
Dejan Lovren- 6.5
It was a pity that Lovren had to get injured just when he was starting to find his form. The injury looked terrible and now we have to see how long he takes to recover.
Alberto Moreno- 6
He showed some good energy and his crossing was an improvement; he tried hard.
Emre Can – 7.5
Having Can back in the team in the midfield after his suspension was very reassuring for Liverpool. He controlled the game in the middle of the park. He also made countless passes and a few good interceptions.
Jordan Henderson- 7.5
Henderson had his first PL start under Jurgen Klopp and impressed at the start with his opening goal. It was a great ball from Coutinho and then Lallana with Henderson scoring with a clinical finish.
James Milner- 5.5
Started off decently but then had no moments of quality. He was, in fact, quite lucky to have not gotten booked after clattering Gardner.
Adam Lallana- 7
He worked well for the opening goal by nodding Coutinho’s diagonal cross to Henderson who knocked it straight into the net. Lallana also had a great chance of scoring the equaliser before being denied by Myhill.
Philippe Coutinho – 7
Another player who makes the Liverpool team look better and stronger. He showed great desire in the first 30 minutes to score. He helped the attacking fluency and initiated the momentum into scoring the opening goal.
Christian Benteke – 5.5
Benteke helped out initially at the defensive end with a few vital interceptions and had more luck at the back than in front. However, his movement was clueless, he shot wide, missed headers, and had no pace. Him starting doesn’t look like the best thing for Liverpool as he seems to be more of the substitute player who comes on later and scores.
Substitutes
Jordon Ibe- 6
Ibe came on for Coutinho in the 71st minute. He attempted a good diagonal shot which unfortunately went straight to Myhill. However, he held the ball for too long.
Divock Origi – 8
Origi came on for Lovren after the defender got injured in the 79th minute. Origi set the pace again for Liverpool after a rough patch they had and scored a beautiful late equaliser helping Liverpool to one point.
Roberto Firmino – N/A
Firmino came on for Lallana in the 86th minute but made no notable impact.
West Brom
Boaz Myhill - 6 Going into this game, Myhill was the keeper with the most clean sheets in the league after Joe Hart. Although it wasn’t a clean sheet, he was solid enough and made a great and important save to deny Lallana late on.
Craig Dawson - 7 Dawson worked hard down right and scored the equaliser for West Brom from a corner.
Gareth McAuley - 8 He was the man of the match. A pillar of strength in the middle and a threat during set-pieces, McAuley was perhaps West Brom’s best player.
Jonas Olsson - 7 He scored his team’s second goal just before half-time and rightly so. He had a goal disallowed earlier due to him being offside (only with five other West Brom players) However, he did manage to score another- this time not offside- in the second half and gave his team the lead. He did his job well at both ends.
Chris Brunt - 7 Due to Brunt’s great set piece delivery, Olsson converted his beautiful corner into a goal. He was solid in defence and was one of the Baggies’ best players.
Darren Fletcher - 7 Fletcher was one of the players people were expecting a lot going into the match. He had to do some hard work in middle to reduce the threat of Liverpool at the onset.
Jonny Evans – 7Evans made a lot of interceptions and passes. He held the ball well. He showed how he can be good at any role – centre midfield, centre back or left back.
Craig Gardner - 7 Gardner was very lucky to have gotten away without a foul for his challenge on Dejan Lovren which saw the defender stretchered off. However, he was another player who showed some skill during set-pieces.
James Morrison - 6 Morrison always looked a threat going forward but didn’t have much of an impact during the attack.
James McClean - 6 McClean played a key role in quietening the Liverpool defence. He was the handy player that West Brom needed and showed how he fits in the team well.
Salomon Rondon - 7 Salomon had a great chance of sealing a victory for his team towards the end but shot wide. He won the battle with Benteke with his energy. He didn’t stop working or making runs, showing why he’s important for the team.
Substitutes
Rickie Lambert – N/ACame on for Rondon in the 90th minute to play against the club he played for last season.
