Liverpool and Aston Villa target Diego: I dream of England move

Diego: Creating a splash in the transfer market

Wolfsburg playmaker Diego has revealed he is in contact with clubs in England over a “dream move” to the Premier League.

His relationship with Wolfsburg became untenable when, in Mid-may, he stormed out of a team meeting after being told he would be on the bench for their fixture, a vital clash versus Hoffenheim. Diego sought to rebuild the bridges with Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, when they had a meeting in June, but they finally decided against a longer stay for the Brazilian international.

“After this conversation it was clear that further co-operation would be difficult and that it is better to separate,” said Magath.

It was rumoured that Diego might have been seeking a return to Brazil, but the player indicated otherwise, saying:

“At this moment, England is where I want to play. We are just starting to have conversations with clubs so it’s too early to say where I will be going, but it would be perfect if I can play in the Premier League.

“I prefer not to mention the names of clubs out of respect for the managers and the owners, but it’s true that there is contact with some clubs in England.

“Of course I will give these offers special attention because it’s my dream to play in the Premier League.”

Liverpool and Aston Villa are the most likely suitors for the Brazilian. Although an attacking midfielder by trade, he could be the man to fill in Liverpool’s problem position on the left flank, where Milan Jovanovic and Joe Cole flattered to deceive, and Maxi Rodriguez only really turned in performances towards the end of the season. He could also add more variety to Liverpool’s attacking options.

His most likely destination, however, is Villa Park. Aston Villa’s creator-in-chief, Ashley Young, sealed a move to Manchester United last week, and with Stewart Downing also rumoured to be heading for the exit, Alex Mcleish could aim to appease the fans with what would be a marquee signing.
