Liverpool: Aspas and Sakho aim to make a mark

Mamadou Sakho of Liverpool

Liverpool have bought a host of new players this season to strengthen their squad and among them, as many as five have been of the defence line. On the transfer deadline day, they signed probably the biggest name when they completed the signature of Mamadou Sakho from PSG, which was quite surprising to many, considering Sakho’s reputation of being one of the most talented young centre backs at the moment.

Sakho had been a vital player for PSG for quite some time, but he fell down the pecking order this season and thus, decided to move on. But what astonished many was his decision to choose Liverpool, who are not the biggest name around anymore and are trying to assemble a squad to break into the top four. But now Sakho has come forward and provided reasons for him joining the Merseyside club.

“I have come here to a club that functions with a family mentality. That is what suits me and I feel already that we have everybody in the family group, heading towards the same goal. Of course it was a big step for me to leave. I’d been with Paris St-Germain from the age of 12 but there comes a time in every player’s life when you have to make some career choices.”

“I had achieved everything I had wanted to do with Paris St-Germain, we had won the title, and I made the decision a while ago that I wanted to take on something else. I knew I wanted to experience a different culture and learn new things and when Liverpool came in for me I was easily convinced. I was happy to leave in the end,” said the defender.

The supporters of the club would hope that he goes on to play many years for them and become one of their main players down the line.

Another one of Liverpool’s new recruit, Iago Aspas, has expressed his disappointment at being unable to leave a mark so far in the season and has hinted that he is having difficulty at adjusting to his new club.

“Over the last four or five seasons I haven’t gone as many games as this without a goal. I’ve never been an out-and-out goalscorer but it’s true that over the last three seasons I have scored quite a number of goals,” he said.

“I suppose on a personal level I’m not entirely happy as I would want to be because I still feel I can do better. I’m working hard every day to improve and to be able to show that on the pitch to my team-mates,” Aspas mentioned.

Aspas joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo for a fee around £7m and shone for the club in the pre season tour. It is high time that he regain the kind of form he had in Spain and do the same for his new club.
