Liverpool is looking to sign Brazilian defender Douglas on a free transfer. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in Douglas after realizing that he is out of contract. Rodgers is unlikely to have more than £25 million to spend this summer, unless Luis Suarez is sold, and wants at least four more players. With Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season and Martin Skrtel unsettled, Douglas was chosen keeping the defence in mind.
Rodgers was also eyeing Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Tottenham’s Steven Caulkner, but their valuations are high. Liverpool also has their sights on Stefan de Vrij at Feyenoord and Sevilla’s Federico Fazio. Douglas, whose full name is Douglas Franco Teixeira, has a Dutch passport after having played in Holland for six years.
On the other hand, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been with a move to the Barca ranks, as has Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris. But it is clear that Valencia’s Vicente Guaita remains the preferred choice.
