Ah, Liverpool FC! They dominated English Football once, but are now living in the shadows of the other competitors. Liverpool have been off the track for two seasons now. The club lost some players due to injuries and some left the club to ply their trade in newer (and greener) pastures.
The new Campaign is just a week away and Liverpool is almost done with re-building the squad. Liverpool’s squad! It has been a topic of discussion not only for Liverpool fans but also rival fans all over the globe.
The squad is twice as good as it was last year at this point of time, on paper. Last year, Liverpool was close to the relegation zone and looked off color, hurt, down and shattered. But as soon as they replaced the manager, Kenny Dalglish came with a dream, a dream to bring them back on track. They picked up the pieces, worked hard, crawled up step by step and signed some new players in the winter transfer window. The second half of the season was great for them and they crawled up to grab a respectable position.
Here are the 4 reasons, why Liverpool will get back in the top 4:
1) Kenny Dalglish:
King Kenny, as the Liverpool fans fondly call him. He is the sole reason for Liverpool’s resurgence in the second half of the season last year. He came on as a coach, as a manager, as a counsellor. He came with vast experience behind him. He healed the players mentally, made them believe that they can do it. Proper tactics, perfect use of the players and some new signings saw them climb the table gradually. They missed out on a Europa League spot but made a statement of intent that they were ready for the challenge. And with an experienced manager like Kenny Dalglish, there is no reason why Liverpool can not claim their traditional top 4 position back.
2) Depth in the squad:
Some new faces and already settled players at Liverpool add depth to the squad. Some creative additions to the midfield and wings like Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam has added a sense of revival in the middle of the park. This improves the bench strength as well. And of course the misery of failed set pieces in the absence of Steven Gerrard will be solved by Charlie Adam. The left wing will see a new face in Downing who is known to have a fantastic left foot and perfect crosses. Jordan Henderson has been a revelation at Sunderland and will also add to Liverpool’s midfield. And Liverpool’s captain fantastic does not need to show his quality, everyone is aware of that. But he certainly needs to stay injury free. What they need is a good centre back as Carragher is getting older and cannot play all the games. Also, an improvement in the flanks would be great as they have conceded a lot of goals from wing play.
3) Perfect Strike Force:
Liverpool is having a perfect strike force in Carroll, Suarez and Kuyt. Despite the departure of Liverpool’s talismanic striker Fernando Torres, the strike force of Liverpool remained more or less the same potent-wise with the arrival of Carroll and Suarez. While Carroll missed most of the season with Liverpool, he did show his quality at Newcastle United. Suarez was fantastic for Liverpool in his debut season. Lovely footwork, ability to glide past the defenders and an eye for goal. This completes a team which deserves a Champions League Spot.
4) Hunger For Glory:
Liverpool is a big name in football. With the weight of history behind them and not-so-great performances recently, Liverpool are hungry to get back in business. It is always said that hunger and passion drives a team to glory. And Liverpool needs just that. There is no doubt that Liverpool will mount a certain challenge for the trophy as well, but finishing in the top 4 is what their top priority is according to Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool has been off color for sometime now and now is the time to announce that they are back in the Game.
Liverpool’s pre season tour was not that great as they lost some games but that does not reduce the quality of the team. All eyes will be set on Liverpool on the 13th of August in their opening fixture against Sunderland at Anfield.
I am a Manchester United fan but I’d like to welcome Liverpool in top 4 for the respect they command because of their history and tradition. And there is no reason that they can not do it.
Best Of Luck to Liverpool and the fans.
Let the season begin.
