Philippe Coutinho is a young, fantastic attacking talent, but he is the only attacking midfielder Liverpool have who could play top level football. Luis Alberto is waiting in the wings but, so far, he’s not quite ready to beat the Manchester Uniteds and Chelseas by himself. This prompts the question then; should Brendan Rodgers seek another attacking talent to help ease the pressure off Coutinho?
Given the system Rodgers tends to use, Coutinho is the only central creative force in the final third, but against Fulham last weekend, he employed a 4-2-2-2 system, using Jordan Henderson next to Coutinho.
Rodgers could move Henderson into midfield and put another creative player akin to Coutinho next to the Brazilian. Someone like Hakim Ziyech would do perfectly.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder plays for Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie and is the team’s creative fulcrum. This season, Ziyech has created 32 chances in total, assisting five times too. To put that figure into context, Marco Reus, of Borussia Dortmund has created 38 chances and Cristiano Ronaldo has 17.
The young attacker has played just 14 league games for the club, scoring twice, but it is this season that he has come to the fore.
Possibly, he may be too raw to start for Liverpool just yet, but the talent is definitely there should Rodgers move for him.
Ziyech is quick, skilful and has fantastic delivery. He is slight in figure but makes up for that with his ball control and dribbling.
He may struggle to come to terms with the physicality of the Premier League straight away but, with time and the right coaching, Ziyech could be moulded into one of the finest attacking midfielder in Europe.
