Napoli winger Dries Mertens has urged Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to join him in Naples, taking to Twitter to urge the 31-year-old Spain international to start negotiating a new contract at Napoli.
Reina looks to be surplus to requirements at Liverpool, having spent last season on loan in Italy with Napoli, and is likely to leave Anfield having lost his place to Simon Mignolet, a summer signing from Sunderland last summer.
He made 30 league appearances in Serie A during his loan spell, keeping ten clean sheets. A teammate of Reina last season, Mertens urged Reina to return. He tweeted his congratulations to Reina on his World Cup display for <Spain against Australia--, before telling him to make his move permanent.
Both Mertens and Reina are currently in Brazil with their respective national sides competing in the World Cup, with differing fortunes. Reina’s appearance against Australia was his first of the tournament – and came in a dead rubber following Spain’s early elimination – while Mertens has featured in both of Belgium’s opening games, scoring in the win over Algeria.
